Staying On The LinkedIn Path

In my last blog regarding LinkedIn, I talked about the differences in professional versus personal voice. The aspect that they both share is honesty. I don’t really “beat around the bush” here or on my LinkedIn account, although the tone is treated more like a resume. I included my freelance design work, as I have had a relatively steady stream of projects. I was not crazy about having to name the freelance work as a “business,” but no sense in shortchanging yourself. With that said, below is a link to my account:

Things To Fix

I would not be honest, if there were not things I would like to update in my profile moving forward. Obviously, more connections would be beneficial. Unfortunately, a lot of my greatest workplace “advocates” are not on LinkedIn, as they see it as yet another social media site, as I once did. This also affects my recommendations. I only have one for my graphic design skills, but certainly I will request from my former co-workers. Also, a good ten years of my work experience was spent in retail and nobody from those jobs are LinkedIn yet.

Final Thoughts

As I progress in my career, my LinkedIn account will only get stronger. It goes to show me, that while I have plenty of Facebook friends, I need to do a better job of networking and maintaining business relationships. I keep the LinkedIn url on my resume, as I hope that someday, it will replace the formal resume altogether. Feel free to leave any suggestions for page as well.

    I’m a LinkedIn newbie so I’m not quite sure how to navigate the page, so here are just a few thoughts assuming your resume is copy and pasted, not populated.

    “Student, MS, Interactive Communications
    Quinnipiac University
    January 2010 — Present (6 months)”
    You don’t need the 6 months listed. When a potential employer reads this, it may not be six months. I would take of length of time on everything. Also, treat your education section like you do your experience. Tell them what what skills you learned specifically.

    Second, you have 2 sections with sales associate. I would take those off completely. They don’t apply to what you want to do. They don’t add anything to the impression you want to give off. If you feel it does apply, I would lose the first one from years 199-2004. There is nothing listed with it, all it says is that you were employed.

    As far as the dates on the jobs/education go, LinkedIn aggregates that automatically, so we have no control over that. While I did list the education skills in my summary, I should probably list them in my experience as well.

    I do agree with you to extent about not including my retail experience, but excluding it would make my experience pretty bare and I don’t want employers to think I’ve only been working since 07. As far as my 99-04 retail experience, it is the same skill-set as the other job (Old Navy and the Gap are pretty much the same), I did not want to be redundant, so maybe it can go.

    Thanks for the feedback and, quite frankly, I can’t wait to get more experience so I can abandon these older, non-applicable jobs.
